Despite winning the Portuguese league title the previous season, Benfica coach Toni was replaced by another big name, Artur Jorge. This season saw significant changes to the team, including the departure of two big stars, Rui Costa and Stefan Schwarz.
The club welcomed back Paulo Bento and Belgian international goalkeeper Michael Preud'homme, as well as forwards Edilson and Claudio Caniggia on loan. The duo have enjoyed fine seasons, scoring 33 League goals between them, but Benfica's mixed campaign in this competition ended in a distant third place, which did not prevent the club from qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
